What Causes Beard Itch?
Every beard wearer knows the feeling. The beard looks great, but that annoying itch just won't go away. It’s a vicious circle of irritation and scratching that needs to be broken. But what causes an itchy beard?
Some of the leading causes of beard itching include:
- Ingrown beard hairs – Caused when beard hairs curl and grow back into the skin, ingrown hairs create raised bumps on the skin that are prone to irritation and itchiness.
- Dry skin – When left untreated, dry skin under the beard causes beard itch and leads to those annoying beard flakes.
- Bacteria – When beard bacteria are combined with flaky skin, your face is left highly prone to irritation. This is why it’s crucial to regularly wash your beard.
How to Stop Beard Itch
Fed up with your itchy beard? We don’t blame you!
Follow this simple routine to help combat beard itch, ensuring your beard looks good, smells great, and most importantly, is itch free!
Step 1 – Clean Your Beard
As a rule of thumb, a clean beard is a happy beard.
Bacteria is a leading cause of beard itch, so you should clean your beard regularly with a specially developed care shampoo to remove irritating bacteria.
Try the King C. Gillette Beard & Face Wash, enriched with argan oil and coconut oil. Its specially formulated with menthol, mild cleansers and balanced conditioners that have been optimised especially for facial hair, helping to remove excess oils and dead skin cells, while keeping facial hairs hydrated.
We recommend using this to wash your beard as often as you wash the hair on your head. A thorough clean can help wash away dirt and bacteria.
Step 2 – Regularly Trim Your Beard
Beards often behave like blackberry bushes when it comes to growth. They grow as they please and like to scratch you in the process. A blackberry bush needs to be regularly trimmed and kept in check if you want berries AND a healthy garden.
It's the same with your beard. Regular trimming helps to prevent unruly, frizzy hairs from turning against your skin and causing beard itch.
Using the King C. Gillette Beard and Moustache Trimmer, keep your beard looking neat and tidy while also preventing an itchy beard getting in the way of your daily activities.

Step 3 – Beard Combing
Regular combing is also a must! Not only does it help to remove lugs and knots (which could be irritating the skin underneath your beard) but combing helps to remove dead skin and flakes which might be contributing to your beard itch.
Every morning, take a few minutes to comb your beard. Team with a beard oil to nourish facial hairs and keep unruly hairs (and beard itch) under control.

Step 4 - Treat the Beard
As mentioned, dry skin is a big trigger for beard itch. So, it’s important to keep your skin and hair hydrated and moisturised, especially after washing your beard.
The best product for this is a specially developed beard oil, which you should use every day.

Step 5 – Try Not to Scratch!
Perhaps our biggest piece of advice: don't scratch it!
We know it’s easier said than done, but scratching causes the skin to become sore and break, which could lead to an infection. So, as tempting as it is to give in to this urge, hands off!
As you can see, you don't have to lose your head, or even worse, your beard, just because of a little beard itch.
"Beauty is pain" is a thing of the past. Just spend a little time each day giving your beard the correct care and attention, and it will not only feeling better, but look its absolute best too!
