Business in the front, party in the back – the mullet is the best of both worlds and we’re happy to say it has received a modern makeover.

While many used to either love or hate this hairstyle, its recent updates have made it a super wearable look that is both bold and versatile.

So, if you’re ready for a style switch-up, it’s time to embrace your inner rebel and learn how to grow a mullet.

Is the Mullet Coming Back?

Perhaps one of the most divisive hairstyles in history, the mullet is an iconic look that we’re happy to say it’s officially back.

Seen on red carpets and football pitches, celebrities have embraced this classic cut for a modern-day look that is rebellious, yet stylish.

Where Did the Mullet Originate From?

While most people associate the mullet with the 1980s, it is much older. Romans, Vikings and Native American warriors wore their hair long at the back and short at the front.

Why is a Mullet Called a Mullet?

The name ‘mullet’ is thought to have gained popularity thanks to the Beastie Boys and their song ‘Mullet Head’, released in 1994.

How Long Does it Take to Grow a Mullet?

This style is undoubtedly a commitment - taking several months to a year to grow, depending on how short your hair is when you start.

However, with a little patience - and a whole lot of attitude - we’re confident you’ll be able to rock one.

How to Cut a Mullet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Whether you're aiming for an 80s-inspired masterpiece or a roguish short mullet, the technique is very similar. So, once you’ve achieved your desired hair length it's time to cut.

1. Wet Your Hair

Before grabbing the scissors, wet your hair as this can offer more grip when cutting.

2. Section Your Hair

Using hair clips to section your hair will help to guide the cut.

To start, place your thumbs just behind the top of your ears and drag them across the back of your head horizontally. This will help you to section the ‘business at the front’ from the ‘party at the back.’

For a more modern take, you may want to trim your sides to create a fade. To allow for this, only section the top of your hair, so your sides are separated.

3. Start with the Sides

If you’re opting to embrace the fade, we’d recommend using our King C. Gillette Beard Trimmer to trim your sides. Designed with precision in mind, achieving an accurate cut may be easier than you think.

To create a fade, trim around your ears so your hair is 6mm long, gradually moving to 9mm and then 12mm as you move closer to the back of your head.

As this can be tricky, take your time and double-check your trimmer settings to avoid a bad hair day.

4. Trim the Top

With your fade in place, it’s time to chop the top.

To do this, hold small sections of your hair between your fingers to your desired length. Then using the trimmer to cut the excess.

5. Cut the Back

After trimming the top, gradually work from the crown, down the back of your head, ensuring that the length gets gradually longer to achieve the iconic mullet cut.

How to Style a Mullet

Once cut, there are a few tips and products that are worth adding to your grooming routine to make sure your mullet remains effortlessly cool.

Brush Back

To create more volume on top we’d recommend brushing your hair back against the grain.

Apply Pomade

Using a styling product such as pomade will help to add definition and shine for maximum impact. Use your hands to really work the product in and add a devil-may-care attitude to your look.

Secure in Place

Ensure your ‘do stands a chance against the unpredictable British weather by locking it in place with hairspray.

Maintenance

As with any bold haircut, frequent maintenance is needed, especially if you’ve opted for a fade. We’d recommend touch-ups every one to two weeks.

Stay on top of your new look with our King C. Gillette grooming products. Formulated to give your facial hair the care it deserves, keep your business in the front looking smart.
